Some of our friends call them "baby straight jackets," but I'm a huge fan of the swaddle. There's a reason every nurse in every delivery ward in the nation knows how to swaddle a newborn in less than six seconds. I highly recommend to parents to study from these babigami masters and know the basic technique cold before heading home with the kid. We started off with some blankets that are sized for swaddling, by Swaddle Designs. They were pretty nice, good weight--not too heavy, and they were easy to use with the basic blanket swaddling technique.
We still swaddle BG and it's been a few months. Although, we've strayed from the ways of the masters, and now we do employ a few of these ingenious new swaddling blankets that make it possible for even the most uncoordinated klutz to swaddle a baby. We have several. The Miracle Blanket is, frankly, pretty much as advertised. It's great for newborns, but its actually not my favorite, that honor goes to the Snug and Tug . It's very easy to use, the velcro is nice and keeps it--well, snug--and it's constructed very nicely. If I could only have one swaddler, the Snug and Tug would be it.
We also have a couple of Kiddopotumus SwadleMe blankets, which are just OK. They were cheap, and they are pretty lightweight, which is good when it's hot in the room (damn radiators). They also make for backup when someone has a spitup or a blow-out. Other than that, I probably would not recommend them as the primary swaddling method.
So there you have it. And I cannot believe I just wrote a blog entry about swaddling blankets. 20 year old me would never have believed this in a million years. Just wait for my rant on bottles.
